Cement board is by far the heaviest type of drywall used in tile wall applications and the most resistant to water. The smaller dimensions of cement board make the installation of it on large walls more difficult but cement board panels fit vertically in 3 foot wide showers or horizontally behind a standard 5 foot bathtub. Paperless drywall has been replacing paper drywall. In sharp contrast cement backer board does not rot warp grow mold or deteriorate when subjected to water.

Regular drywall is not appropriate. Cement backer board is mainly used as a sub surface for tiling. The level of humidity is just too high to depend on standard drywall used in the rest of your home. While it may be heavy installing cement board is just like installing drywall with a few minor differences.

The quality of the board is a little tougher than regular drywall but some construction pros find it easier to cut. In high moisture shower areas such as shower enclosures use cement backer board. Tear the drywall out all the way back to the studs. For starters the cement backerboard will need to be cut to the proper dimensions with a jigsaw.

Drywall panels fit between wall studs spaced 16 inches or 24 inches apart. When exposed to moisture which any wallboard will be in a bathroom gypsum board swells molds and deteriorates. Many professional installers even recommend against using water or mold resistant drywall in high moisture areas. Gypsum board is not the best choice of material for bathroom walls however.

Be cognizant that cement board requires a moisture barrier behind it which makes the installation process longer than moisture resistant drywall. Start with the back wall. Standard sheets of drywall are made from a core of gypsum sandwiched between layers of paper.
