Ceiling Light Black And White Wire

If your ceiling fan has four wires check their colors again.

Because the wire in the wall to the switch will have a black and a white wire you will want to hook the white to the black wires. Black wires always signify the positive or hot leg of the current while white wires signify negative also called neutral or return. Identify the individual wires coming out of your ceiling. The white wires on the fan go to the bundle of white wires. Ceiling fixtures almost always have a black and white wire. Then the red wire in your box goes to the non white wire on your ceiling fan which is often blue. Connect the white wires neutral wires from your fan and ceiling together. There should be a white copper or green and black wire coming out of the ceiling s electrical box.

If you only have black wires in your box connect both the non white wires from the fan to the black wires in the box. Some setups will also have a blue wire which powers the lights on your fan. Light fixtures with more than one lamp may have a pair of black and white wires for each lamp. Just as a general fyi you normally will have 2 line wires run to switches.

When there is an extra hot wire it is red. Lastly connect the blue wires together or the blue wire to the black wire for lights. Remember that the hot black or red wire goes to the brass colored screw neutral white to the silver screw. I am very confused about this.

These connect to the black and white wires in the electrical box with the provided larger wire nuts. Connect the black wires together. The black wire goes to the bundle of black wires. So for instance it looks like you have a switch on the hot black wires.

If you want to run both the light and fan on one switch twist the blue and black wire from the unit together. Hook the neutral and ground wires first. In this case consider a fan with green ground white neutral blue hot for the fan and black hot for lights wires.
